Cat boarding

Boarding a senior cat or a cat on medication: what to prepare

Older cats and cats with health needs can board safely with the right information. A simple checklist of what to tell the cat hotel and what to pack.

Senior cats and cats with ongoing health needs can enjoy a calm, safe stay — the key is clear information and a cat hotel that is comfortable giving medication and keeping a close eye on changes.

Talk to your vet first

If your cat has a medical condition or has been unwell recently, ask your vet whether boarding is fine and whether anything should change while you are away. Ask for a short written summary of the condition and treatment, and keep your vet's phone number handy for the carers.

Tell the cat hotel before you book

  • The condition (for example kidney disease, diabetes, thyroid problems, arthritis) and how it shows day to day.
  • All medication: name, dose, time of day, and how it is given (tablet in food, pill popper, liquid, injection).
  • Diet: prescription food, portion sizes and feeding times.
  • What is normal for your cat — appetite, drinking, litter habits — so carers can spot changes.
  • What to do in an emergency, and whether you agree to a vet visit if needed.

What to pack

  1. Enough medication for the whole stay plus a few extra days, in the original packaging, with clear written instructions.
  2. Enough of the usual food (especially prescription diets) plus a little extra.
  3. Any special items: a low-sided litter tray for stiff joints, a soft bed, a familiar blanket.
  4. A copy of the vaccination record and your vet's details.

Comfort for older cats

  • Older cats can find steps and high shelves harder — a room with easy access to food, water and litter helps.
  • They may sleep more and prefer quiet. A calm environment with a hiding spot suits them well.
  • Short, gentle play and grooming help keep them content.

Boarding at Catacure

We follow your cat's usual food routine, and medication can be given during the stay as one of our optional services. Please tell us about any health needs when you book on our Cat Boarding page, or book a private viewing to talk it through with us first.
