Cat boarding

Cat hotel or pet sitter in Singapore: which is better for your cat?

Both can work well. Here is how to choose between a cat hotel and a home-visit sitter, depending on your cat, your home and how long you are away.

When you travel, there are two common options in Singapore: a cat hotel, where your cat stays with trained carers, or a pet sitter, who visits your home once or twice a day. Neither is right for every cat, so it helps to think about your cat's personality and how long you will be away.

When a cat hotel is a good choice

  • Longer trips. For more than a few days, many owners prefer someone looking after their cat throughout the day, not just during a short visit.
  • Cats that need watching. Kittens, seniors and cats on medication benefit from carers who can notice changes in appetite, litter habits or behaviour quickly.
  • Peace of mind. A good cat hotel offers a clean, secure, air-conditioned room and regular updates, so you know how your cat is doing.
  • No keys to hand over. Nobody needs to enter your home while you are away.

When a pet sitter can work

  • Short trips. For a night or two, a confident adult cat may be happy at home with a visit each day.
  • Very anxious travellers. Some cats find the carrier and the car ride very stressful. Staying in familiar surroundings can suit them.
  • Several pets at home. If you also have other animals that need care, a sitter can look after everyone at once.

Questions to ask either way

  1. How often will someone see my cat, and for how long?
  2. Will I get updates (photos, messages, CCTV)?
  3. What happens if my cat stops eating or seems unwell?
  4. Is there a vet nearby, and will you take my cat there if needed?
  5. What do you need from me — vaccination records, a cat licence, food, medication?

Tips for a smooth stay

  • Keep your cat on its usual food to avoid tummy upsets.
  • Write down habits and quirks: where it likes to hide, how it likes to be handled, what scares it.
  • Leave your contact details and your vet's details.
