Ragdoll cat care guide: grooming, feeding, health and personality

Everything a new Ragdoll owner should know — from brushing the silky coat to the breed’s genetic health tests.

Ragdolls are sweet, calm and loving cats with striking blue eyes and a soft, semi-long coat. They are one of the most popular breeds in Singapore — and for good reason.

Personality

  • Gentle and relaxed. Ragdolls are known for their calm nature and often follow their people from room to room.
  • People cats. They enjoy company and do best in homes where they are not left alone for very long periods.
  • Good family cats. Their easy-going temperament suits families and other gentle pets.

Size

Ragdolls are a large breed — males typically weigh 12–20 lbs and females 8–15 lbs. They grow slowly and can take several years to reach their full adult size, so choose a sturdy cat tree and a large litter box.

Grooming

  • The silky, semi-long coat needs brushing every day or every other day.
  • Ragdolls can be bathed more often than many breeds — every few weeks with a gentle cat shampoo. Dry the coat thoroughly afterwards.
  • Pay attention to the areas behind the ears, under the arms and the "trousers" on the back legs, where knots form first.
  • Regular brushing also reduces hairballs.
  • Trim nails every few weeks and check the ears and teeth.

Feeding

  • Feed a good-quality, complete diet suited to your cat's age.
  • Keep your Ragdoll at a healthy weight — a large, relaxed cat can put on weight easily. Measure meals rather than leaving food out all day.
  • Make sure fresh water is always available.

Health

Ragdolls can carry genetic conditions such as Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) and Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). Responsible breeders test their breeding cats for these.

At Catacure, our Ragdoll kittens come with genetic test results of the kitten and/or its parents, and our sales contract includes a 1-year guarantee against these life-threatening genetic conditions.
